Are you facing issues due to ice dams during winters?

During the winter season, you will normally face a lot of problems due to the snow. Some of the homeowners face the problem of ice dams over the roof. It is mainly the ice ridge formation towards the edge of the roof. It takes place when there is lots of snowfall and the temperature is below freezing. When ice dams are formed it stops the water from the melting snow from properly draining into the gutters. If you are facing such a problem, make sure that you get in touch with a good roofing company to help you out and make sure that you get your roof attic insulation Richmond Hill checked.

Ice Dam

It is important for you to get the roof attic insulation checked, as ice dams can be formed due to poor ventilation and attic insulation. The heat escapes through your house interiors in the attic, and so it heats the roof underside. Due to this, the edges of the roof do not get heated, which leads the edges to be below freezing. It results in melting water draining off the roof and refreezing into ice. Due to this, ice dams are created.

When ice dams become big, it can lead to a lot of problems. The main problem you will face is that the water will not be able to flow down the roof. Due to this, it will settle over the roof itself and will develop back up under the roofing shingles. In such a situation, water will find cracks, openings, and gaps to drain. It can even get in the attic of your roof. Also, it might go inside of the outer support walls. When there is additional water, it can make way inside your home. All these can lead to drywall, damage to insulation, and the build-up of mildew and mold. To deal with such a situation, it is advisable to call a good roofing company to help you solve this issue.

There is no need for you to take all the stress of getting onto your roof for solving the ice dam problem in freezing cold. At times, handling it by you can prove to be dangerous. If you climb your roof using a ladder to break the ice dam, there are chances of falling and being injured. On top of that, there are chances that you might damage the roofing material. Rather than taking all this risk, it is always good to leave it in the hands of a professional roofing company.

If you want to avoid the recurrence of the ice dams, make sure to install more attic insulation. Make sure you hire a qualified roofing expert to check the attic and see if there is proper ventilation. If there is some problem, make sure you ask them to fix it.

If you have made up your mind to hire an experienced and reliable roofing company to solve the problem of an ice dam, make sure you consult Logik Roofing. They can help you with the best attic insulation solutions.

Deciding What Colour of Shingles to Use for Your New Roof

Do you have a house upgrade with a roof pitch that is not standard and that is associated with a standard Attic insulation services Richmond hill roof pitch?

Or are you planning to add an extension in the form of a winter garden, outdoor kitchen or garage to your existing shingles roof?

Let us show you how to install a low pitch roof that is connected to a shingle roof with a standard pitch. First some basic information:

This aesthetically laminated shingles are installed at an inclination of 9.5 ° to 90 °.

Then install the shingles according to the general Cambridge Xtreme 9.5 ° shingles installation instructions. Changing the roof pitch between low and high slope should be done with metal edging. You should pay special attention to this part of setting the shingles if you want to do it right and properly.

To fasten roofs with a pitch of less than 9.5 °, you must use bitumen rolls that are glued with a burner. You should also use bitumen rolls for extensions with a slope below 15 °, on which you do not want to use Cambridge Xtreme 9.5 ° shingles. Bituminous rolls are glued to each other with a burner, which ensures resistance to all weather extremes on roofs with a small slope.

How to create a roof with a small slope?

Install dry planks or OSB boards on a wooden frame. Keep in mind that on a roof with a small slope, the snow will last longer, so it is recommended to use a more massive material that will be able to withstand the increased weight, e.g., OSB boards at least 22 mm thick. When using the boards, make sure that they not only dry out, but also do not twist after being placed on the roof. Ensure the right slope and drainage in every part of the roof. Avoid situations that from a board of different thicknesses, create a depression on the roof that could retain water and cause leakage!

Substrates for gluing burner applications After installing the roof slab-base, install the gutter hooks and cover the edge of the gutter with metal edging. Install the shingles base by horizontally unwinding the base on the edge of the gutter and fasten it with nails to the board approx. 20 to 40 cm in each direction. The next row of substrate should be unscrewed above the first row with at least 10 cm of overlap and re-nailed every 20 - 40 cm.

Continue until you reach 40 cm above the junction of the low and sloping roof Question: Is it necessary to use base or can any bituminous substrate be used? The base is a modified bitumen roll that serves as a substrate under the top bitumen substrate and is compatible with it.

If different incompatible base rolls are used as a substrate, they can be separated from each other.

Getting Ready for an Attic Top-Up? Things You Need to Know

When you are topping up your attic insulation, your objective is to improve the energy efficiency of your home by increasing the R-value of the attic insulation to reduce energy loss. One important consideration is what R-value is right for your home?

Why R-Values Matter?

R-values refer to the insulation’s ability to insulate the home and prevent energy loss. The higher the R-value, the better insulated the home is to reduce energy loss. Achieving the desired R-value in your attic requires understanding the differences between your existing attic insulation and the R-value you want to top it off to.

For 2021, there have been updates and changes to the insulation building codes for Ontario. For attic insulation, new homes will need to have a minimum of R-60 in attic insulation. If your home is older, and depending on when it was built, you could have R-10, R-20, or possibly a much lower R-value.

How Your Roof Benefits from Proper Attic Insulation

Did you know that your roof benefits when you have the proper amount of attic insulation installed? Some of the benefits your roof gains include:

  • Increases the life of the roof shingles. Your shingles will last longer because there are not at risk of ice dams, and less extreme changes in temperatures.
  • Helps prevent heat loss from the home. When you can prevent heat loss from the home through the attic, you can avoid problems with ice dams. Ice dams form when heat from underneath the shingles melts the snow. Then, at night when it is colder, the water refreezes and creates ice dams. The water could also runoff and form ice on the sides of the roof as it cools.
Ice dams can damage roof shingles because when water freezes, it expands. As such, shingles can pull away from the roof, leaving gaps where water could get into the attic and cause water damage to your home.
